Hurricane Tots!

A perfect appetizer for your next gathering with friends. This recipe is a takeoff of the Hurricane Tots at Pailolo at the Westin on Maui.  I tried this once again- earlier post - but this time I think I nailed it! We had just returned from a trip to Maui with our Foodie Friends and we had to introduce them to Hurricane Tots.  A couple weeks after our return we were joining them on a Zoom Happy Hour and they sent out a recipe suggestion - Hurricane Tots.  I researched the ingredients and the result was great.

This is a three part recipe. You will need one bag of Ore Ida Tater Tots, a jar of Furikake. Furikake  is a dry Japanese condiment to be sprinkled on top of cooked rice, vegetables, and fish, or used as an ingredient in onigiri.  This can be found in the oriental section of your supermarket.  Then you make the following two sauces.

First make the Sweet and Tangy Soy Glaze.  I found this on the DrivemeHungry.com website.

Ingredients

3 cloves garlic - chopped
1 inch piece of ginger - thick slices
¼ cup honey
¼ cup soy sauce
3 Tablespoons rice vinegar
2 Tablespoons hoisin sauce
1 Tablespoon sesame oil
½ teaspoon Korean red pepper flakes - optional for spicy
½ teaspoon fennel seeds - optional

Directions

Add all the ingredients in a pot and boil it uncovered for 5 minutes or until it's reduced to your liking. Keep stirring to make sure it doesn't burn. Remove the ginger slices. Serve with on the side or use as a glaze. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Next the Wasabi Aioli Sauce

Ingredients

1 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons wasabi powder
1 teaspoon soy sauce

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl, whisk well.
Chill for 30 minutes before serving.

Now to put this together.  Preheat your oven to the temperature instructed on the bag of tater tots.  Once you reach the cooking temperature, Place the whole bag of tots on and cook until crispy.

When the tots are done, take them out of oven and place on platter.  Drizzle the Sweet and Tangy Soy Glaze and then the Wasabi Aioli.  Sprinkle on the Furikake!  Enjoy.
